The River - Step on in!

Life over the past six or so years has been difficult. The doctor says I am disabled due to a chronic migraine-like headache. It presents something like a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Reading, writing, mental focus, and screen-time are virtually impossible for more than a few chunks of an hour each day. I am waiting for my healing! I have taken to listening to the audio bible, voice-to-text for writing, and AI.    Somewhere in the last year, I served at a church which provides meals for the poor and homeless. It's a small event and lasts about 45 minutes. In order to get a meal, participants listen to a short worship set and a five to ten minute message -- a sermonette. Then we end by praying for anyone who desires it. I enjoy praying for others but was asked to deliver a short message. As I noted earlier, it's a challenge to study, compose, and even speak without an occasional stutter. I felt the Lord speak the word river . I recalled a time where I preached at a church outs...

Dog is God Spelled Backwards - and Dog is Man's Best Friend

What made you believe (or what would make you believe) in God? Faith in God, or belief in the Bible don't come easy in a scientific world; one filled with new discoveries and plausible theories. Christians often site proof texts and archeological finds, but the truth is that all of these discoveries have been refuted - with or without science. For many, the biblical fact that God says He is, is enough proof. Well, it wasn't enough for me! The Bible, a seemingly rambling collection for random writers and styles was no match for my intellect, reason and personal logic. For this Christian, there are only three things that make me certain of God's existence, and the validity of Christianity as described in the Bible. 1 Peace -  Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding.  Unless you have experienced it, th...

All Things - Life on Life's Terms

Some days life is just, well, "life." A long time ago I learned to ask God what should I be doing, and what should I hand over to Him. Maybe you've heard of the " Serenity Prayer " - it's a good one! Like others, I am not perfect at it. Have you noticed, when things get tough, one group says "hang in there" - meaning keep on trying, and another says "let it go" - meaning you've done what you can, and the rest is up to God. So who's right, do we hang in there, or let go? I happen to believe that throwing Bible verses at problems is not always God. Some folks believe that the will of God, their personal destiny, the very key to life, is in the Bible. I would like to disagree. Before you shout: Blasphemy, consider this. Even if every word in the Bible is God breathed and true - and I believe it is - the central truth of Christianity is not believing what is in the Bible. It is faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus, and the sa...

Nobel Peace Prize - What's It Really About?

This morning I woke up to the news that Barrack Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize. Growing up, this prize always seemed to be revered in my household as given to the brightest, and most world changing individuals. These ladies and gentleman were distinguished because of the work that they have done to benefit mankind. Of course my mother studied political science, among other things, at Yale University. She was liberal. Regardless of her political views, she treated this award with the highest esteem, and so have I until the last few years. The history of the Nobel Peace Prize, and the Laureates that have won it, is rich. What is the Nobel Peace Prize really? It is an award for peace - and anti-war. However; one reader put it this way, "It is fodder for the right-wing talk show hosts." According to http://www.nobelprize.org , this is how the Prize came into existence. ""On 27 November 1895, Alfred Nobel signed his last will and testament, giving the lar...

Stongholds and the Prince of Peace

Over many years I have tried to fix myself with self-help programs, books, tapes, Christian radio, conferences, Christian music and thousands of hours of prayer. One would think that this type of assault on the darkness in my own life, would have produced much better results. There is only one word in the Bible that describes the problem accurately, "stronghold." A stronghold is exactly what it sounds like, it's something that is very resistant to being overcome. Pop-Christian culture glibly tosses around the word "victory," apparently overcoming a stronghold. However; the true measure of victory is easily assessed by the fruit and character in one's life. Just look around the church, and you'll see that many are conformed to the ways of this world (age). I know, you are thinking that's not me, but shut off the PC, the TV, the Blackberry, the cell phone, the electricity, the heat or A/C and start foraging for food and growing crops. Are you the same...
