Music, Miles, Soaking Worship and Friendship

I have been a musician all of my adult life - well, the fact that I am either adult, or a musician are both questionable statements.Check with my wife for details. August 24th, 1978, my best friend Dennis and I went to Guitars Unlimited in downtown New Haven to buy our first guitars. (That's us together this past summer.) We didn't know a thing about music except that we LOVED it. He was a folkie, and I was rocker; nothings changed. There we stood talking to Rick Castaldi (I ended sitting in with him in my first gig a year later.) I bought an electric, and Dennis bought an acoustic. History in the making for both of us... Yesterday was a neat day for me. Not only did I celebrate 30 years of sobriety (which Dennis was a part of), but I also bought a new guitar - a Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty. My favorite guitarist was Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin who was well known for his late 1950's Gibson Les Pauls. I once owned a number of ...

5 1/2 Ways to Worship

Everyone who goes to church supposedly worships. There are lots of things one can worship, that's for sure. Here is a LIST . Admittedly, there are different worship styles within the Christian Church. And no one seems to agree what the right way to "worship" is.  Who really knows what God is after in our worship? Have you thought about it - about worship? -1 Worship in Song: This is the singing stuff. Organs, choirs, plain chant, rock bands - we have a wide variety of musical styles within the Christian genre. And of course you have your folks who can't sing and advertise it by singing louder than anyone else. Musical worship seems to be the quintessential form of worship. After all there is a worship leader and he always leads the music. Seems odd... maybe (s)he's a Levite. -2 Worship in Giving:  My friend Dave calls them the beggars plates. Some churches have an offering basket, others put it on the platform, some just have a box in the back of the room. M...

I Wonder Where the Signs Are?

Do you believe it? God repaired a water pump on a Toyota pick-up. Yes, he removed a lump, and healed bronchitis too. He gave a word of knowledge about a persons life so that they would know that He was speaking to them about their future in Christ. Yes, God multiplied invitations to a Christian conference on the streets of Oslo, provided the exact amount for a plane ticket to minister in Ohio and shortened the miles to the airport. This morning I am pondering the supernatural. All of the above happened to me personally. As I type, I can feel God's presence - as if He is knocking on the door - something seems eminent, yet, I can't put my finger on it. I thought some sort of revival was going to break out last Sunday in church - like a glass filled to the rim. I feel the same this morning. I actually don't know what a revival is. I have read about many of them. There are the renewals (in the church) and the revivals - the presence of God sp...

Enter His Gates! - Why Worship God with Music?

A few years ago the Christian Rock genre was cranking along and artists were occasionally crossing over to secular media. U2, Amy Grant, and POD just to quickly name a few. During rival in Australia, many artist were heard on secular radio. It's hard to say if music influences culture or reflects it, however; it is certainly a driving media force. I don't think that I know anyone without an iPod. Today is the 30th anniversary of the " Footloose Event " - you know that little conservative town in Texas where dancing was forbidden at Elmore City High School. They finally got a prom, and of course the movie Footloose was based on it. It's hard to dance without music. So what does all that have t do with church or even God? Like all art forms, it is an expression of the soul and creative spirit - the souls that was created by God. Artistically there is really no "right" or "wrong" - just popular acceptance and obscurity. The Bible is pretty...

Take Note - And Listen to a Few Too

Growing up I was forming my musical tastes. My influences came from my family, and then those that I had as friends. In Kindergarten Mrs. Gannon would play all the kids tunes on the piano. Bingo , If You're Happy and You Know It and of course Happy Birthday . One of the girls in class brought in a 45 rpm of the Beatles, I Want to Hold Your Hand - I liked it. In first grade my teacher, Miss Carol, who wore Go-Go boots, played guitar (and probably smoked pot - but I don't know) and we sang folk tunes, Puff the Magic Dragon , If I Had Hammer , and Michael Row Your Boat Ashore . At home my dad listened to the radio - stuff like Winchester Cathedral and tunes by *GAK* Lawrence Welk , Tommy Dorsey and Al Hirt . On the other end of the house my brother played Bubble Gum music including: The Archies , 1910 Fruit Gum Company and of course the Monkees . As his musical tastes evolved he turned to pop by the McCoys , Status Quo and other chart toppers of the 60's. Everyone ha...

Why Would I Want to do THAT!?

I was thinking over life now that a couple of major projects are completed at work, the daughters three are enrolled in school, Yaris 3 is almost repaired and the sun has returned after a Nor' Easter dumped as much as 10 inches of rain on us in 4 days. I thank God is wasn't snow. Today it's St. Patrick's Day. I talked to Mary Anne about living a simple life on a farm somewhere a lot warmer than Boston . We've laid out a retirement plan that hopefully includes not working. ;o) There isn't much holding us here and the cost of living is just plain stupid. Some days I feel trapped by the rats, and occasionally I get a few days off an run one of them over. Rick Warren spent a lot of time writing and teaching on the Purpose Driven Life . I was reviewing those purposes listed below. I am not a huge fan of Warren since his flip-flop on Prop 8 in CA and I find his stuff sort of elementary. It is however; engaging for the average American trying to eek out a Christian...
