Fixing the Church from Your Pew - Part 2 of Many

Last time we talked about love, maturity and hearing the Holy Spirit. I have a couple more thoughts.

Participation: It is interesting that much of the church have become spectators on Sunday mornings. It's too bad, because it opposes Paul's command to participate:

1 Corinthians 14:26 What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.

Have you been to a service where you can get up front and and speak what God has put on your heart? I find it really exciting that God wants us to participate. Some churches have small-groups where you can participate in such a manner, but not many.

How do you join in from the pew? First talk to the pastor. This type of service is hard to control - and most would rather go without it. Some, do work towards releasing folks like you bring something from God.

Relationship: The church is pretty lame on relationship in most of America. We are busy folks jamming our days with work, and our free time with technology; it's no wonder we don't have a chance to hang out with others.

Why not ask God to give you folks that you can be a friend to. How about purposing to meet a newcomer and offering to call every day, or meet for coffee once a week? People need to connect, and have friends, that is how the Kingdom works.

The Bible says that in the last days, love will grow cold. (Matthew 24;12) I think that busy lives will fan the chill of lovelessness.

Prayer: Not a whole lot happens in anyone's life without prayer. How about taking some time every day to pray for someone, a group, or the whole church? Spirit-led prayer can accomplish a lot! Maybe you can set aside a few hours a week to pray right in the church - for love, relationship, revival - for God to move - the list is endless.

Did I miss anything?

Here's Part I in case you missed it.

My church sets up a microphone in the back. They pause between songs during worship for people to get up and pray or give a word of encouragement or read a verse or several back there over the microphone. At first, this was a really strange concept to me, but I’ve come to love it, although I haven’t utilized it myself. The participation from the entire body is cool though, rather than just from the deacons and pastors.

“People need to connect, and have friends, that is how the Kingdom works” AMEN!

All of this was good, but I wanted to comment on those couple of points. :)

David:

You pretty well covered this missing concept in churches of today.

To share and have a lasting and meaningful fellowship in the churches is paramount for growth, but as you said every one seems too busy to apply the fundamental principle of the churches purpose and being.
you nailed it on the control part - I've been apart of church services where anyone can speak up and I imagine most churches opt to not use that format as things get said they don't want to. They'd much rather control the dialogue and get to their agenda.

Mad Libs: An Unforgettable Church Service

Hopefully you have heard of Mad Libs (R) ! They are stories that you blindly fill in the blanks for articles of grammar and then read the completed story. Since I was a kid, these have always been a hoot. I decided to make up my own. Just fill in the blanks next time you are at small group and then read it back. God is Great, Beer is Good, and People are Crazy

There was a discussion on Facebook today about how some people think Christians are "whack jobs." Regardless, God is still great. I don't really know much about beer. I haven't had one in just about 30 years. There are a lot of folks that consider themselves to be Christian. Some because they do good, and others because they have faith in God or are born again-- and others because they grew up in a Christian denomination. Far be it from me to decide who is in, and who is out. Some say we'll be surprised at who is going to be there, and others say who think they are in will be surprised when they are rejected at the Pearly Gates. Hmmm... But let's say you are a real Christian who is feeling passionate about doing something for God. You know something beyond throwing a few bucks in the offering plate and trying to be a good person. The church calls it service or ministry, which could include such things as: reading scriptures on Sunday morning, planning a harves...

They Are Going to Tax the Rich!

Health Care is law! I don’t know anyone that is against people having health care – I certainly am not. I have been working hard to quantify the cost of this new legislation. And they are going to add to the tax burden of those making over $200,000 per year. Some think that because the Good Samaritan paid for the injured man, we should too. It’s a strong statement. Here is what we are paying for the is new this year and in future years because of the health care plan. To quote Ric Edleman from who I gathered a lot of insight, "Life just got harder." 2010 - 10% tax on tanning (because we have, count em', 3,000 emergency room visits due to tanning bed injures each year!) in addition to your state and local taxes if there are any. (But we did get off on the botox clause because it was considered discrimination against woman and John Kerry.) - To pay for a deficit in it's mandatory health care system, Massachusetts, increased sales taxes, had a freeze on lowering property...
